ARTIST'S STATEMENT
We are surrounded by objects - both natural and man-made. Some thoughtful, most not. Some interesting, most not. I get immense pleasure creating objects - taking an idea, a thought, the mental picture, and then working the chosen material of the object - dealing with the mass, the structure, the visual presence. The process is a series of decisions, none minor, resulting in a new object - definitely thoughtful, hopefully interesting, maybe beautiful.
I always feel the need for a sense of order or structure in a piece. I find the clarity and discipline of the geometric form exciting - a manifestation of the human mind in a pure and rational state. Many of my sculptures represent pure geometric forms from one angle but those pure forms rapidly “devolve” or “deconstruct” into a chaos of lines from other angles as you move around the piece. To me, this achieves a kind of life and introduces an element of surprise in the piece.
My chosen materials tend to be metal and wood. Each presents its own challenges to work with. Of the metals, aluminum is especially satisfying to work with. It has a mass and accessibility that are appealing to me. I love its color. Woods are so varied in color, texture and working qualities that a particular wood affects a piece in a particular way. Sometimes a piece (Torso #1, for instance) has a more organic grounding with geometric elements.
My sculptures and sculptural tables are all metal, all wood or a combination of the two. They have ranged from 10 inches to 10 feet tall. Sculptures have been installed in climates ranging from benign Southern California to extreme Chicago.
